About the Opportunity

RDN has exciting opportunities for full-time Mechanic, Transportation Services roles, based in Nanaimo, BC. Fixed shift patterns, determined by seniority, include 10-hour evening shifts from 1:30 PM to 12:00 AM with weekend work, or varied 8 and 10-hour shifts with 3 consecutive days off.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for contributing to the effective operation of the Transportation Services Department through the diagnosis, repair, and modification of RDN public transit buses, light-duty passenger vehicles and equipment.  

Reporting to the Chief Mechanic, you support the Transportation Services Department by assisting team members in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations, departmental goals, and objectives.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing, adhering to, and promoting adherence to safe work procedures to foster a secure working environment
  • Performing Preventative Maintenance, Commercial Vehicle Inspections, and safety inspections to ensure operational integrity
  • Assisting in equipment inspection, documentation, and coordination of necessary repairs to maintain functionality
  • Diagnosing and executing repairs across all phases of vehicle or equipment maintenance for optimal performance
  • Conducting road calls, roadside repairs, and vehicle change-offs to sustain operational service levels
  • Maintaining comprehensive records, schedules, and reports for all servicing and repairs in alignment with the PM program
  • Notifying the Shop Chargehand or Chief Mechanic about low inventory levels to ensure timely restocking
  • Keeping the workspace clean and organized to support a productive and safe environment
  • Winterizing equipment, including towing and snow removal apparatus, to prepare for seasonal demands
  • Assisting in the training of new staff on mechanical aspects of buses, including fluid level checks and interpreting electronic fault codes
  • Performing building maintenance and repairs to ensure facility integrity and functionality

More About You

To qualify for this role, you must hold a Heavy-Duty, Truck and Transport, or Automotive (with a BCIT Air Brakes for Mechanics course - CTMX 010 or an equivalent BC course) Mechanics Red Seal certification, with 3+ years of relevant work experience. An equivalent mix of education and experience will be considered.

The following are also required:

  • A high school diploma, or equivalent
  • Authorized Inspector (AI) Certificate or ability to obtain one within the first 90 days of employment
  • Must have a valid ICBC Class 5 BC Driver’s License with an Air Brake Endorsement
  • Ability to undergo a criminal record check with vulnerable sector clearance

The following skills and experience will be strong assets:

  • Demonstrated experience in first aid
  • Proficient in computer systems, including Microsoft Suite, for accessing CVIP, managing work orders, and understanding equipment schematics within Preventative Maintenance Programs
  • Comprehensive understanding of WHMIS and CVSE regulations and procedures
  • Knowledge of the safe and proper operation of equipment and work procedures
  • Proven knowledge of automated start systems, hydraulics, engines, electrical and air conditioning systems, air brakes, electric drive motors, and mobile equipment
  • Flexibility to work a shift pattern
